What Is A Panniculectomy?

A panniculectomy is a cosmetic surgery procedure for individuals who have had weight loss or bariatric surgery. Often, following weight loss surgery, the skin can be stretched, and you may develop panniculitis. Panniculitis is when the adipose tissue, or “apron,” hangs from the abdomen over the genitals and becomes inflamed, sore, and tender. Panniculectomy surgery removes the fatty tissue to relieve patients of symptoms.
How Much Does a Panniculectomy Cost in Charleston County?
The cost of a panniculectomy will vary depending on the scope of the procedure, but it is often covered by insurance. We will go over your payment options, which includes financing through CareCredit®. We accept cash, checks, and most major credit cards and ask that full payment be made prior to your services.

Benefits of a Panniculectomy

There are three elements to the benefits of panniculectomy surgery. Because the panniculectomy procedure can alleviate panniculitis and its many uncomfortable symptoms, it is often covered by insurance. Second, the benefits are aesthetically pleasing. The panniculectomy reduces excess tissue in the area, allowing for a slimmer, more trim physique. Third, with those medical and a cosmetic benefits, many patients feel an enhanced sense of self-worth and confidence following a panniculectomy.

Who Is The Ideal Candidate For A Panniculectomy?

A panniculectomy is a specialized procedure only for weight loss surgery patients who have panniculitis. If you are not a weight loss surgery patient but do have the “apron” of adipose skin that overhangs the genitals and thighs, you should consider abdominoplasty. Schedule a consultation at our office today to allow our physicians to help you determine the most beneficial procedure for you.

What to Expect at a Panniculectomy Appointment

During a panniculectomy, your physician will create specially placed incisions along the targeted abdominal area. Using these incisions, he will remove the excess skin creating the overhang. Please note that this is less transformative than an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), which removes the excess skin and tightens the underlying muscles and surrounding tissue. This procedure typically takes around two to five hours and requires general anesthesia to keep you as comfortable as possible. It is also recommended that you are not smoking at the time of your procedure.
