Plastic surgery in the past was an option most often associated with adults, especially older adults, who desired to improve their appearance. But the number of teenagers undergoing plastic surgery is trending upward.

Nearly 230,000 cosmetic procedures were performed on patients from the ages of 13 to 19 in 2017, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Doctors say part of the reason is due to the social media explosion, but they add that it’s also to fix a feature that makes teens a target of bullying, or to address a health need.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – It’s human nature that as people grow older, they want to look younger. The tendencies of aging can make that desire an uphill climb for many people. Even if they feel energetic and healthy, they may look old and tired.

The rise in gym memberships and cosmetic surgeries in recent years indicates as much, and surveys further underscore Americans’ insecurity with their looks. A study conducted at Chapman University and published in the journal Body Imagefound that women and men were about equally unimpressed with their own appearance. Out of 12,176 respondents, only 26 percent of women were “extremely satisfied” with their looks, and just 28 percent of men were.
