What is Microneedling?

Sweetgrass Plastic Surgery is very pleased to offer microneedling treatment with the SkinPen®, which is an automated microneedling therapy system that vertically pierces the skin to naturally stimulate collagen induction therapy (CIT) and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI). This is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure utilizing a cutting-edge device that contains ultra-fine needles.

These needles are used to puncture the skin to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture creates a channel that triggers the body to fill these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. Through the process of neovascularization and neocollagenesis, improvements in skin texture and firmness result, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks. Microneedling is a safe, chemical-free treatment method that triggers new collagen production that can be performed on all skin colors and types, and it is sometimes the preferred treatment over laser as there is zero risk of burning.

What is the Cost for Microneedling?

The total cost of your microneedling treatment will vary based upon how much treatment is required. During your consultation we will develop a personalized treatment plan, and you will be informed of your treatment costs and methods of payment. We are happy to accept cash, personal checks, and credit cards. Financing is also available so that our microneedling treatments are affordable to all of our patients.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling is a simple and fast method for safely treating wrinkles and scars, and because the epidermis remains intact, the procedure can be repeated safely. It is also suited for regions where laser treatments and deep peels are not typically performed. At Sweetgrass Plastic Surgery, our SkinPen® microneedling therapy is now becoming widely used as a treatment for photoaged skin and scarring, improving the skin’s appearance and quality.

Who is a Candidate for Skin Pen Microneedling?

Candidates for SkinPen® microneedling include anyone suffering from mild to moderate acne scarring, surgical scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, pore size and skin texture issues or keloid scarring. Microneedling reduces pore size, improves the quality and texture of the skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and improves the look of disfiguring scars from surgery, accidents or acne. Because it’s minimally invasive, it doesn’t cause significant wounding of the skin. It isn’t light-based, so virtually anybody can safely undergo microneedling therapy with minimal risk of long-term adverse effects. Even areas of the body where skin is typically thin, such as the hand, can undergo treatment with SkinPen®, where depth of penetration is consistent and easily regulated. Some patients will benefit more than others from microneedling therapy. Microneedling therapy is inexpensive, especially when compared to other therapies which are usually energy-based and much more complicated. Microneedling with SkinPen® can be used on any skin type.

What is the Procedure for Microneedling?

To begin your treatment, a topical anesthetic cream is applied by your physician to keep you completely comfortable during your procedure. A small handheld pen-like device with a sterile, disposable tip with 12 tiny needles is then used to pierce the skin. Our needling pen’s multi-speed and adjustable needle depth allow needles to pierce the skin’s layer at 90 degrees and increase the absorption of products. The device glides gently along the skin, penetrating the layers of the skin closest to the surface, at a depth of up to 2mm, to create numerous tiny needle wounds. The therapy encourages your body to respond through the creation of new collagen and elastin fibers. As the skin responds, it plumps and thickens, reducing the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and fine line. Multiple treatments may be necessary, with the number of needling sessions dependent on your individual skin condition. Three or four treatments may be recommended for mild to moderate acne scarring, whereas deeper scars and stretch marks may require upward of five treatments, with an interval of four to six weeks between treatments typically recommended for best results. After your treatment, soothing Vitamin-C serum or hyaluronic acid are used to hydrate, heal and protect your skin.
