IV Chelation Therapy is a process in which EDTA is used as an intravenous infusion. EDTA is a synthetic amino acid that binds heavy metals and minerals such as lead, iron, copper, cadmium, aluminum and calcium and holds them tightly so that they can be removed from the body. Chelation Therapy has been in use since the 1940’s for the treatment of heavy metal poisoning and is approved by the FDA for this purpose.
In addition to EDTA, there are 2 other chelating agents, DMPS and DMSA.
DMPS is a synthetic amino acid that is given intravenously or orally and is particularly effective at binding mercury.
At Sweetgrass Healing, DMPS is often given as a push at the end of an EDTA chelation session. DMSA is a synthetic amino acid that when given orally binds all heavy metals including mercury and is particularly effective at moving lead out of your bones and deep tissue.
At Sweetgrass Healing our typical protocol takes advantage of all 3 chelating agents as we have found that a multimodal approach is most effective at quickly and safely removing heavy metals.
Could Heavy Metals Be Your Problem?
Since 1900, 800,000 new chemicals have been invented and manufactured. Chemicals that have not been made in over 30 years are still showing up in the cord blood of infants born today. There are 35 metals that can damage your health and you may be exposed to every day at work or at home. Twenty-three of these are designated as “heavy metals.” Small amounts of many of these metals are necessary for good health. And just like the phrase “too much of a good thing is bad”, the same holds true for these metals. Unfortunately, too much of these chemicals and metals is all too common and can wreak havoc on your health and your weight.
Heavy metal toxicity is associated with chronic conditions including:
- Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Diabetic neuropathy and renal disease
- Fibromyalgia and myofascial pain
- Chronic fatigue
- Autoimmune diseases
Is That Why I’m Fat & Tired?
Toxic chemicals can block your liver and kidney detoxification pathways. They can also interfere with your hormones, particularly thyroid and insulin. Poor function of either or both of these hormones can cause you to feel tired and gain weight.
Heavy metal toxicity can also leave you with low energy. It can also damage your nervous system, lungs, blood, kidneys, liver and heart. Many patients with Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and cancer have seen improvement when we simply eliminate their excess metals.
EDTA Chelation Therapy is used to clear blocked arteries and therefore increases blood flow to the heart, brain, legs and throughout the body. Therefore, it may be extremely useful if you have Coronary Artery Disease, circulatory problems, memory decline or diabetic ulcers. It can offer you an alternative to invasive coronary bypass surgery, balloon angioplasty or stents and may reduce your risk of stroke.
Chelation therapy reduces vascular inflammation caused by specific toxic metals and reduces the body burden of those metals in other organ systems. Its use for heart disease has been reviewed at the National Institute of Health (NIH). The NIH funded a multi-center clinical trial called the Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy, the TACT Trial.
TACT was conducted over a 10 year period with over 1500 participants. Every participant already had suffered a heart attack and was on maximum medical therapy. The study was the best designed double-blind, placebo control that had 4 arms. Group 1 received chelation and vitamins. Group 2 had chelation and fake vitamins. Group three had fake chelation and real vitamins. Group 4 had fake chelation and fake vitamins.
Over 55,000 real chelations were given with NO SIDE EFFECTS! More importantly, Group 1 (chelation and vitamins) had a whopping >20% reduction in another heart attack, stroke, hospitalization for angina, needed a bypass or stent, or most importantly…death over those that received fake chelation with fake vitamins. That number went up to over 40% in patients that had heart disease and diabetes. A second NIH study looking at only diabetics with heart disease is now being conducted (TACT 2)
Chelation therapy can also be used for people with metal allergies to remove the offending metal antigen from the body and thereby possibly reducing signs and symptoms of many autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and SLE as well as obviating symptoms from fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and myriad other related diseases.
How Does It Work?
While physicians who use Chelation Therapy see the benefits in our patients every day and studies published in peer-reviewed medical journals provide solid clinical evidence for benefit, we are not entirely certain of the biochemical mechanisms that make it work. There are three primary theories:
- EDTA directly removes calcium found in the fatty plaques that block your arteries, causing these plaques to break up
- The process of chelation stimulates your body to release a hormone that in turn causes calcium to be released from the fatty plaque in your arteries
- EDTA chelation reduces the oxidative stress on the walls of your arteries. Reducing oxidative stress reduces inflammation in the arteries and improves blood vessel function.
The American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM) conducts educational courses in the proper and safe use of intravenous EDTA chelation. They also publish a physicians’ Protocol which contains professionally recognized standards of medical practice for Chelation Therapy.
Why should I do chelation at Sweetgrass Healing?
The 3-pronged chelation protocol removes metals and plaque faster than traditional IV chelation methods, saving you time, money – and – most importantly, your health.
We offer several different bundled chelation packages that offer a significant discount over individual treatments. The right package for you depends on your particular condition or detoxification needs.
